ACTIVITIES OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT








FLAIR-THE WALL MAGAZINE: The Department of English inaugurated its 17th issue of Flair: The Wall Magazine on 14th September 2015. This year's theme was 'Stack to Reel' and it was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. Vikas Sharma, Screenplay writer from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Guest of Honor was Principal Dr. Sanjay Kharat. Student’s creativity was applauded and appreciated during the performance of a skit where they portrayed the role of famous literary characters that became popular through cinema. While Prof. Sharma enumerated upon the colorful world of Cinema, he also emphasized the crucial role of languages in this field. The function was presided over by the Principal and Vice –Principals and attended by staff and students of the college.

ENGLISH CORNER: A Platform which is periodically updated throughout the year is a compilation of common errors in grammar, spelling, pronunciation and usage of English in day to day conversation. This year we displayed articles on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Booker Prize and Sahitya Academy Award winners, Communication Skills, interview of Ruskin Bond and other vocabulary items.

SPOKEN ENGLISH COURSE: A three month certificate course run by the department with strong emphasis on practical lessons conducted in a well-equipped Language Laboratory. To cultivate the awareness of communication/conversation in English language students are given training in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

FILM SHOW: A film based on Shakespeare’s famous play “The Merchant of Venice”and another film based on Henrik Ibsen’s famous play “ADoll’s House”was screened for students of S.Y.B.A General English in the month of September 2015 and January 2016 respectively in the Language Laboratory of the college.

SEMINARS/PRESENTATIONS: In order to develop self-confidence, communication skills, research skills and use of technology among students, presentations were made by students of F.Y.B.Com and TYBA on diverse topics. In order to develop the reading and writing skills, students of S.Y.BSC, were given a project on ‘Book Review’ and Global Business Icons.

Pune International Literary Festival 2015: Students of FY, SY and TY BA and B.Com. attended the Festival of Literary Minds along with the Head of the Departmentfrom 4 to 6 September, 2015 at YASHADA, Pune.

WHAT’S THE GOOD WORD? : Intra – College Quiz Competition was hosted by the department on 13th January 2016 to test the vocabulary and fluency of students in English. Students (2 per team) were shortlisted to participate in the Quiz on the basis of their performance in a written test. Prof. AlkaKamble, Head, Department of English, Shivajinagar was the Chief Guest and she inaugurated the Quiz by asking the first set of questions to the finalists.

INTER- COLLEGIATE ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION: Department of English along with Hindi and Marathi departments organized the competition in January 2016. Entries were invited from colleges under University of Pune on various topics like Water: The Elixir of Life, Plastic Money: Boon or Bane etc.

Guest Lecture:Dr. UjjwalaBarve, Assoociate Professor of the Department of Communication & Journalism, Savitribai Phule Pune University,spoke on “Communication Skills & Careers in English” on 18th December 2015. She enlightened the audience about the wide variety of career opportunities available in the field of English Language, Literature and Communication.

LITERARY CLUB: The Department of English formed a literary club to initiate, encourage and organize various literary meets. The club caters to the lovers of Literature from all faculties. First year students from Arts and Commerce are presently the active members of the club. A screening of SHERLOCK based on the famous detective of Sir Arthur Canon Doyle was organized in the Language Laboratory of the Department on 15th February 2016. The members of the club also met for two reading sessions and discussed on various styles of accents around the world.
