DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY1111111

In order to keep pace with global technological advancements and to meet the demands and challenges of the present and future, the Department of Microbiology was established in June 1996 and Post Graduate course (M.Sc. Microbiology) commenced from July 2002. The college also has a recognized Research Centre for M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Microbiology.

Departmental Facilities:

  • Qualified and experienced faculty members.
  • Visiting faculty/Guest Lectures from Pune University and Research Institutes.
  • Well furnished separate laboratories: one for BSc., three for M.Sc. & one Research Laboratory.
  • Equipments/Instruments like Biosafety cabinets, PCR, UV-visible spectrophotometers, Rota Vac evaporator, high speed refrigerated centrifuges, electrophoresis units etc are available for practicals.
  • Microbiology Syllabus related books worth Rs. 6,50,000/- are available in Central Library.
  • The department subscribes National and International Scientific Journals.
  • Access to internet and thereby to e-journals is available.

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • We have well–equipped 1 under-graduate, 3 post-graduate laboratories and 1 Research Laboratory having uv- visible spectrophotometers, laminar air-flow cabinets, refrigerated high speed centrifuges and gel electrophoresis units.

UGC sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course


The Department offered a UGC sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course in "Applied Techniques in Industry and Laboratories" from June 2012. The syllabus for the same was approved by University of Pune. Fifteen students of T.Y.B.Sc Microbiology opted for this course in year 2014-15. The objectives of this course are to bridge the gap between academia and industry, to impart career and market oriented training, to impart soft skills and entrepreneurship skills and to empower students and increase their employability.

The highlights of the course are :
  • Practical and theoretical training by experts from industry
  • Training in Soft skills and entrepreneurship
  • Visits to various industries
  • Projects /training at various industries

Visits to various industries like Parle – G Foods and Kamdhenu Pickles were conducted. An MOU was signed with Janakalyan Blood Bank for training of students. Students will receive a certificate on completion of required credits. Placement assistance will be offered to the students under this course.

II) UGC- Career Oriented Course: The Department of Microbiology, Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Ganeshkhind, Pune-16 offered an UGC sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course in “Applied Techniques in Industry and Laboratories”. The syllabus for the same was designed as per UGC guidelines of 20 credits of 15 hours each of which 8 were for field work/project/training. This syllabus was approved by University of Pune. This is the third consecutive year of the course with 15 students of T.Y.B.Sc Microbiology who have opted for this course.

The objectives of this course were to bridge the gap between academia and industry, to impart career and market oriented training, to impart soft skills and entrepreneurship skills and to empower students and increase their employability.

The core curriculum of the course was based on three papers:

Lectures and Practicals were conducted by experienced resource persons from industry and laboratories and internal staff.

The highlights of the course are:

Examinations are conducted and a joint certificate is awarded to the students with name of University of Pune and Modern College, Ganeshkhind. Placement assistance will be offered to students under this course.
